Err Msg: Unable to Open Address Book, a Component Is Missing

After you upgrade your computer to Windows 98, you may receive the following error message when you open the Windows Address Book:


If you reinstall Microsoft Outlook Express, you may still receive the error message.

This behavior can occur if you upgrade your computer to Windows 98 by running Windows 98 Setup from MS-DOS and you have more than one folder whose name begins with "Outloo" in your Program Files folder.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Windows Setup tab.
3. Click the Outlook Express check box to clear it, and then click OK.
4. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
5. Double-click the Program Files folder.
6. Rename the Outlook Express folder to "Old Outlook Express" (without the quotation marks), and then click Yes when you are prompted to confirm that you want to rename the read-only folder.
   
   For information about renaming folders, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "renaming" (without the quotation marks), and then double-click the "Renaming Folders" topic.
7. Rename the "!$!$!$!$.oer" folder to "Outlook Express" (without the quotation marks).
8. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
9. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Windows Setup tab.
10. Click the Outlook Express check box to select it, and then click OK.
