SYMPTOMS

When you try to add a network component in the Network tool in Control Panel, the protocol, client, or service you want to add may be missing.

NOTE: If the Nettrans.inf file is missing, there may be only three clients listed in the available protocols option:

ATM Call Manager
ATM LAN Emulation Client
PPP over ATM (protocol)

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if one or more of the following files used by Windows to add a protocol, client, or service is missing or damaged:

Nettrans.inf
Netcli.inf
Netservr.inf

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, determine if one of the files used by Windows to add a protocol, client or service is missing or damaged, and if it is, extract a new copy of the file. To do so, use the following steps:
1.Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2.Double-click Network, click Add, click Protocol, and then click Add. View one or more of the following network protocols, and if any of these protocols are missing, extract a new copy of the Nettrans.inf file to the Windows\Inf folder:
