PRB: Cannot Create Disk-based Web Application or Unable to Contact Web

When trying to create a new Web Project in Visual InterDev the following error occurs in Step 3 of 4: Or, in Step 1 of 4, the following error occurs:

This error occurs if FrontPage Server Extensions are removed.

The "Unable to contact Web server" occurs if the FrontPage Server Extensions are not on the server machine specified in Step 1 of 4. The "Cannot create a disk-based Web..." error occurs in Step 3 of 4 if the client machine is a separate machine from the server, and while the server has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed, the client machine does not.

Reinstall FrontPage Server Extensions on the appropriate machine.

This behavior is by design.

The FrontPage Server Extensions are required for several features of the product to complete successfully, including creating a new project.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

1. Remove the FrontPage server extensions from a machine (Windows 95 or 98 with PWS or NT with NT Option Pack).
2. Open Visual InterDev, and from the File menu, select New Project.

If the machine that does not have the extensions installed is specified as the server in Step 1, the message "Unable to contact Web server <servername>" will appear. If the server machine specified in Step 1 has the extensions installed, but the client machine does not, then the "Cannot create a disk-based Web..." error will appear.
