OL2000: (IMO) How to Remove and Reinstall Fax Starter Edition

This article describes how to remove and reinstall the Symantec Fax Starter Edition for Microsoft Outlook 2000.

To remove the Symantec Fax Starter Edition and reinstall the components, follow these steps:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1. Remove the Symantec Fax Starter Edition entries from the Registry.
2. Remove the Symantec Fax Starter Edition account.
3. Remove the Symantec Fax Starter Edition files.
4. Remove the Symantec Fax Starter Edition printer driver.
5. Reinstall the Symantec Fax Starter Edition.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. Consult your product documentation to complete these steps.

Remove the Symantec Fax Starter Edition Entries from the Registry

1. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Outlook.
2. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
3. In the Open dialog box, type regedit, and then click OK to run the Windows Registry Editor.
4. Select the following subkey (click the folder in the left pane), and then click Delete on the Edit menu:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\OLFAX
5. Select the following subkey (click the folder in the left pane), and then click Delete on the Edit menu:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\OLFAX
6. On the Registry menu, click Exit to quit the Registry Editor.

Remove the Symantec Fax Starter Edition Account

1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Mail tab.
3. Select the Symantec Fax Starter Edition option, click Remove, and then click Close.
4. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer.
5. Move all of the files in the following folder to any other directory:
   C:\Program Files\MicrosoftOffice\Office\Data

NOTE: Do not simply delete the files, in case you need them as a backup.

For information about how to move files, click the Start button, and then click Help. In Windows Help, click the Index tab, type moving files, and then click Display.

Remove the Symantec Fax Starter Edition Files

Verify that all fax services have quit by using the Ctrl-Alt-Del procedure and End Task on any fax Task running (such as Wfxmsrvr, Olfaxmod). Rename the following files. For example, change the file name extensions from ".dll" to ".old" or another unused extension.

Usually found in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\1033: Usually found in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Addins: Usually found in C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook: Usually found in C:\Windows\System:

NOTE: You may need to rename these files, because they are still in use. Restart to MS-DOS Mode to rename the files. Because files have been automatically removed, the files may be absent.

Remove the Symantec Fax Starter Edition Printer Driver

1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
2. Right-click the Symantec Fax Starter Edition printer driver and then click Delete on the Shortcut menu. Click Yes when you receive each of the following messages:
   Are you sure you want to delete the printer Symantec Fax Starter Edition.
   
   -and-
   
   Some files were used only for this printer and are no longer needed. Would you like to delete these files now?

Reinstall the Symantec Fax Starter Edition

1. 
   
2. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click to select Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Add/Remove.
4. Click Add or Remove Features.
5. Click the plus (+) sign next to Microsoft Outlook for Windows to expose the installable options.
6. Click the icon next to Symantec Fax Starter Edition, and then click Run from My Computer.
7. Click Update Now.

When Symantec Fax Starter Edition is installed, start Outlook. If the Symantec Fax Starter Edition Setup Wizard does not start, close Outlook and run the Olfsetup.exe file.

To run Olfsetup.exe, follow these steps:

1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Find, and click Files Or Folders.
2. In the Named dialog box, type Olfsetup.exe.
3. In the Look In list, select your hard disk drive option.
4. Select the Include Subfolders option, and click Find Now.
5. Double-click the file name in the lower pane of the dialog box to start the Symantec Fax Starter Edition Setup Wizard.

After Installation

If you do not have a New Fax Message option on the Actions menu after installing Symantec Fax Starter Edition Setup, delete Outcmd.dat and restart Outlook. This forces the command bar to update.
