Article ID: 199666 - Last Review: July 27, 2006 - Revision: 2.1 Windows NT Task Manager Shows All SDI DocumentsThis article was previously published under Q199666 SYMPTOMS
If you bring up the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Task Manager when multiple documents are open in Microsoft Word, the Applications tab lists each open document. However, the Processes tab lists only one instance of the Winword.exe file process. If you end the task on a single document in the Task Manager, a dialog box appears that states the following: This Windows application cannot respond to the End Task request. It may be busy, waiting for a response from you, or it may have stopped executing.
CAUSE
The Single Document Interface (SDI) allows each document to occupy its own window. Windows NT reports each SDI window as a separate application, although there is only one Winword.exe active.
MORE INFORMATION
In Microsoft Windows 98, this same feature displays the Close Program with only one instance of Word, no matter how many documents are open.
