Symptoms

·         When an Administrator installs Office 2007 on a Terminal Server, by default Setup populates the User Information fields with the currently logged-on user’s information.  The User Information data may also be set in Config.xml.  After connecting to the Terminal Services environment, all non-Admin users also receive the Administrator's user information in their own user profiles and are not prompted for their own usernames or initials.

Cause

·         Any username provided during Setup (via UI or Config.xml) is written to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\UserInfo registry key.  If the installing Administrator opens an Office 2007 application with the server still in Install mode, Terminal Services will then mirror this data to the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\UserInfo key.  Non-Admin users then receive this username from the above-referenced registry key in their own user profiles.

Resolution

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue for new users in a current Terminal Services deployment, the Administrator should do the following:

  1. Close all Office programs.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK or type regedit in the Start Search box and then select regedit.exe
  3. Locate the following key and then right-click and delete the Username and UserInitials values:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\UserInfo

To resolve the issue for all users in a new Terminal Services deployment, the Adminstrator should do one of the following:

  1. Select Customize during installation and clear the Username and Initials values
  2. Edit the <Office_Edition>.WW\Config.xml file in Notepad with Username set to empty value (""): <USERNAME Value="" />
  3. Remove the Username and UserInitials values after installation, as described above, from the registry key:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\UserInfo
