Error message in the Online Services Directory Synchronization Tool in Forefront Online Protection for Exchange: "A non recoverable error has occurred: System.Security.AuthenticationException"

Symptoms

In Microsoft Forefront Online Protection for Exchange, the Online Services Directory Synchronization Tool (DST) generates the following error message:

A non recoverable error has occurred: System.Security.AuthenticationException

Cause

This problem occurs because another application is reserving port 8080 on the system on which the DST is installed.

Resolution

To work around this issue, perform the following steps:

  1. Open the EhsSyncAdmin.exe.config file for editing.

    By default, this file is located at: C:\Program Files\Exchange Hosted Services\EhsSyncAdmin.exe.config.
  2. Search for all instances of "8080" in the file, and then change these instances to the number of a port which is not reserved by the server.
  3. Open the Microsoft.Exchange.HostedServices.EhsSync.Service.exe.config file for editing.

    By default, this file is located at: C:\Program Files\Exchange Hosted Services\Microsoft.Exchange.HostedServices.EhsSync.Service.exe.config.
  4. Search for all instances of "8080" in the file, and then change these instances to the same port number that you used in step 2.
