Symptoms

When you use the Connect to Computer feature of Remote Web Workplace to login to a client computer, the screen may be extremely slow to redraw.

Cause

The issue may occur if the client computer you are connecting to uses the Windows Vista or Windows 7 Aero Interface and has a graphic desktop wallpaper enabled.

Resolution

You can use the following steps to modify the configuration file for Remote Web Workplace to improve the remote desktop experience by disabling some of the desktop features.

Steps:
a.  Make a backup copy of the following file  C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Bin\webapp\Remote\tsweb.aspx

b.  Open notepad in elevated mode and open the file C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Bin\webapp\Remote\tsweb.aspx

c. Find the line "' Performance settings"

d. Insert this line without the quotes below it
"MsRdpClient.AdvancedSettings2.PerformanceFlags = 111"

This section of the file should like the following after you edit it:

   ' Performance settings
   MsRdpClient.AdvancedSettings2.PerformanceFlags = 111
   MsRdpClient.AdvancedSettings2.BitmapPersistence = 1

   ' If there is a Port, set it
   MsRdpClient.AdvancedSettings2.RDPPort = 3389

e.  Save the file

f.  Login to Remote Web Workplace and Connect to the Client Computer to test the functionality.

The following site  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa381215(VS.85).aspx describes the functionality of the MsRdpClient.AdvancedSettings2.PerformanceFlags setting.  The value 111 disables the following features:  wallpaper, full-windows drag, Menu animations, Themes, Cursor shadow, and Cursor blinking.   If you wish to only disable certain features you would use a value different from 111.  For example, if you wish to disable only the desktop wallpaper, you would use the value 1.
