Rules in Error - "Cannot reply to message" error when you use Run Rules Now

Symptoms

When you use the Run Rules Now feature to manually run a rule, the rule does not fire and you receive the following error in the Rules in Error dialog box:

Cannot reply to message

This error is shown in the following  figure:

Note: This problem does not occur when your Outlook rules are run automatically as new email items arrive in your mailbox.

Cause

This problem occurs due to a change first implemented in Outlook 2007 with Service Pack 2. The change affects rules that use the following action configured for the rule:

have server reply using a specific message

This action can be seen in an example rule in the following figure:

Resolution

To work around this problem, please change your rule to use the reply using a specific template action. (The screen shot for this step is listed below).

In order to use this action, you first need to create and save an Outlook template file (.oft) to your hard drive. Then, when you select reploy using a specific template, you browse and select the .oft file. (The screen shot for this step is listed below).

Note: Using the reply using a specific template action is a client side action. Therefore, Outlook must be running in order for this rule to fire.
