SYMPTOMS

The Data Transformation Services (DTS) Wizard finishes with an error when importing data from a Microsoft Excel 97 spreadsheet with 256 or more columns. The error is "Too many fields defined."

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, break the package into two different tasks, each of which import fewer than 256 columns from the Excel spreadsheet datasource.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 7.0.
