Warning message when multilingual user interface (MUI) pack is installed in incorrect edition of Windows 7: "This copy of Windows is not genuine"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install updates or files from the Microsoft Download Center, you may receive a "This copy of Windows is not genuine" warning message in Windows 7. Also, when you try to validate Windows 7 from the Genuine Microsoft Software site, the validation attempt may be unsuccessful.

Additionally, this warning message may contain one of the following validation error codes:

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the following conditions are true:

Multilingual User Interface (MUI) packs are installed that provide additional display languages.
You have one of the following editions of Windows 7 installed:

Starter

Home Basic

Home Premium

Professional

Multilingual User Interface (MUI) packs are supported on, licensed for, and available for Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Enterprise editions. If these language files are present on another edition of Windows 7, Genuine Windows technologies will detect tampering on the system and then display the "This copy of Windows is not genuine" warning message.

To determine whether these conditions are present on your computer, follow these steps:

Step 1: Determine the Windows Edition

Right-click Computer.
Click Properties.

If the current operating system Edition for Windows 7 is Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, or Professional, continue to the "Step 2: Determine whether an MUI pack is installed" section to determine whether an MUI pack is installed on the computer.

, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If the User Account Control dialog box appears, click Continue.
Locate and then double-click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MUI\UILanguages

Notes

If more than one language appears under this subkey, an MUI pack is installed. For more information, see the "Resolution" section.
If only one language appears under this subkey, or the current operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise, the information that is provided in this article will not resolve your issue. RESOLUTION

Note The resolution methods that are presented in this article will revert the operating system to its original language. The language may not be one that you understand.

Method 1

If a third-party program was used to install the MUIs, you can use the same program to uninstall the MUIs. After you uninstall the MUIs, restart the computer, and then revalidate the operating system at the following Microsoft website:

Method 2

If you cannot locate or use the third-party program to uninstall the MUI, and you need help, contact Microsoft Support
