SYMPTOMS

When working with a SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting services in SharePoint integrated mode if you switch between Connected to Local mode and then back again to Connected mode, you will notice the following error message in the WSS_WPG Membership section in RSIntegrationResults.aspx page

Successfully added <Domain\Username> to the WSS_WPG group on <computer name> but failed to restart the Report Server service.
Cannot stop ReportServer service on computer <computername>
The service cannot accept control messages at this time.

If you try to start the Report server from the command prompt using net start reportserver you will receive messages that are similar to the following

The SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER) service is starting........
The SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER) service could not be started.

The service did not report an error.

RESOLUTION


Service pack information for SQL Server 2008 R2

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SQL Server 2008 R2. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To workaround the problem manually start the Reportserver service using the Services applet in Control Panel or Reporting Services Configuration Manager.
