Article ID: 211385 - Last Review: January 23, 2007 - Revision: 3.1 Find and Replace won't use buttons on Formatting toolbar in WordThis article was previously published under Q211385 On This PageSYMPTOMS
If you do a "find" or "replace" procedure and try to add formatting to either the Find what or the Replace with box, when you click a toolbar button on the Formatting toolbar, the Find and Replace dialog box loses focus, and the formatting description is not added to the Find what or Replace with box. For example, when you click Bold on the Formatting toolbar, the Find and Replace dialog box loses focus, and the insertion point blinks in the Word document and not in the Find and Replace dialog box. CAUSE
This functionality is different from that in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows and is the result of the implementation of the Single Document Interface (SDI) in Microsoft Word 2000 and later versions. WORKAROUND
When you do a "find" or "replace" operation in Word, you must use the Format button in the Find and Replace dialog box and not the buttons on the Formatting toolbar.
