After a document named Normal.dot is placed in the User templates (or Workgroup templates) folder and you try to start Microsoft Word 2000, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in WINWORD.EXE at 015f:30215216.
This error may occur when the global template (Normal.dot) is actually a Word document named Normal.dot. When Word attempts to use it as its default global template, the error message listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article appears.
Word documents have a specific file format that is different from the Word template file format.
