SUMMARY

Scientific journals generally require that all references to a source have the same footnote number. They also require that the footnote be printed only once for each source.

This article demonstrates how you can assign more than one footnote or endnote the same number in Word by using the Footnote Reference field within a cross-reference field.

How to Create Multiple References to the Same Footnote

To assign a footnote reference the same number as another reference, follow these steps:
  1. Place the insertion point where you want the cross-reference to appear.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Cross-reference.
  3. In the Reference type list, select Footnote or Endnote. Select the footnote or endnote that you want to refer to, and then click Insert.
  4. If you want the cross-reference to be displayed in superscript like the original, follow these steps:
    1. To display the field codes, select the cross-referenced item, and then press SHIFT+F9.

      A field similar to the following is displayed:
      {NOTEREF _Ref0123456789 \h}
    2. Place the insertion point between the final number and the closing brace.
    3. Press SPACEBAR once, and then type \f.

      The field now resembles the following:
      {NOTEREF _Ref0123456789 \h \f}
    4. With the insertion point in the field, press F9 to update the field.
    5. Press SHIFT+F9 to show the cross-reference.
