SYMPTOMS

Assume that you have the Microsoft Visual Studio Team Explorer Everywhere 2010 Eclipse plug-in installed. When you try to connect to a server that is running Visual Studio 2008 Team Foundation Server (TFS) Service Pack 1, you notice the following symptoms:
  • You receive the following error message in the Connection failed dialog box:
The server's error could not be parsed as XML. No SOAP fault found.
  • The following error message is logged in the TeamExplorerSOAP.log file:
unable to parse server's response body: <string of characters>

Note
You can connect to the TFS server successfully either from Team Explorer 2010 or from the Team Explorer Everywhere 2010 command-line client for Visual Studio 2010 Team Foundation Server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because an unrecognized response that is received from the TFS server or that is received from one of the components in the TFS server is processed incorrectly. The components can be the Reporting service or the SharePoint service.
