Error message you try to install the Update for Microsoft Outlook 2010 from Office 365 Desktop Setup: "Installation failed"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Update for Microsoft Outlook 2010 from Office 365 Desktop Setup, you experience both the following symptoms:
  • You receive the following error message:

    Some updates could not be installed
  • In the dialog box, the status of the Update for Outlook 2010 is displayed as Installation failed.

CAUSE

The update can only be installed on a computer that is running the release-to-manufacturing (RTM) version of Microsoft Outlook 2010 14.0.4760.1000 or a later version. However, Microsoft Office 2010 SP1 Beta is not supported.

RESOLUTION

Upgrade Outlook 2010 to the release-to-manufacturing version 14.0.4760.1000. Do not upgrade to Microsoft Office 2010 SP1 Beta.
