A memory leak occurs in the Rhs.exe process when you configure IIS 7.0 World Wide Web Publishing Service in a Windows Server 2008 failover cluster

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use the Clusweb7.vbs script that is described in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article 970759 to configure Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC) in a Windows Server 2008 failover cluster. After the server runs for some time, a memory leak occurs in the Resource Hosting Subsystem (Rhs.exe) process. Additionally, the clustered W3SVC service experiences an Out of Memory condition. When this issue occurs, the server may become less responsive.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because a handle to a IDispatch object is not released for every call of the GetDispatchInterface function. The Clusweb7.vbs script contains the LooksAlive function that calls the GetDispatchInterface function in the background. This causes the memory leak that is described in the "Symptoms" section.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Prerequisites

You must have Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 installed to apply this hotfix. Additionally, your computer must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Vista SP1
  • Windows Vista SP2
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2

Restart requirement

You must restart your computer if IIS is running when you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. MORE INFORMATION

To reproduce this issue on a IIS 7.0 server that is running in a non-Cluster environment, save the following scripts in a vbs file. When you run the vbs file, a memory leak occurs in wscript.exe process. You notice the memory usage of wscript.exe process continuously increases by using Taks Manager.
