SYMPTOMS

When you pack a presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint has discovered a problem with one of the presentation filenames and cannot create the package file. You should correct the filename, then restart the Pack and Go Wizard.

CAUSE

This error message can occur when no valid TEMP folder is defined in Windows, or when the TEMP folder has been deleted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, define a valid TEMP folder, or verify that one already exists. Then verify that the TEMP folder is referenced correctly in the Autoexec.bat file.

NOTE: The following steps assume that Microsoft Windows 98 is installed in the C:\Windows folder.

Create a Valid Temp Folder

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type C:\Windows in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. When Windows Explorer opens, verify that there is no subfolder named TEMP.
  4. Click File, point to New, and then click Folder.
  5. Type TEMP and then press ENTER.

Verify That the Temp Folder Is Referenced Correctly

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig and then click OK.
  3. In the System Configuration Utility window, click the Autoexec.bat tab.
  4. Click to select the entry that begins SET TEMP = C:\path.

    1. If the entry is SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP, click OK.
    2. If the entry reads anything else, click Modify, and then change the entry so that it reads SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.
    3. If the entry does not exist, click New, type SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP, and then press ENTER.
  5. Click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted.
