You receive a you must install PowerPoint 97 error message when you install the PowerPoint Custom Soundtrack add-in in PowerPoint 2002 or PowerPoint 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the PowerPoint Custom Soundtracks Add-in, you receive the following error message:
You must install PowerPoint 97 before installing the Custom Soundtracks Add-in.
When you click Exit Setup, the setup program for the Custom Soundtracks add-in quits and the following message is displayed:
PowerPoint Custom Soundtracks Add-In Setup was not completed successfully.

CAUSE

The setup program for the PowerPoint Custom Soundtrack Add-In searches for PowerPoint 97. If it does not find the program, it quits. The PowerPoint Custom Soundtrack Add-In cannot be installed in later versions of Microsoft PowerPoint.

WORKAROUND

To workaround this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Install Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows.
  2. Install the PowerPoint Custom Soundtrack Add-In. To install, run double-click Setup.exe in the following folder located on the CD-ROM:
    \ValuPack\MusicTrk
  3. Upgrade to the later version of Microsoft PowerPoint.
  4. Install the Updated Custom Soundtrack Add-in (Pp2kmus.exe).For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the PowerPoint 97 Custom Soundtrack add-in.
