Windows NT Err Msg: Corrupt and Unreadable File. Please Use CHKDSK.

SYMPTOMS

When you use functions to open files, you may encounter the following situation:

When you use NTCreatFile() with the file open by file ID attribute specified on a 64-bit NTFS file, the ID opens the file but, when you attempt to delete the file from a command prompt while the file is open, the following error message occurs:
Corrupt and unreadable file. Please use chkdsk.
The same file, when started normally, will delete fine.

NOTE: New functionality was added for NtQueryInformationFile(..., FileNameInformation) to obtain the pathname of the file associated to the handle.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT 4.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT version 4.0 Service Pack 5.
