Symptoms

Consider the following scenario in an environment in which Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) does not exist:

  • You use Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Storage Server 2008 as a Network File System (NFS) file server.

  • You create a folder and share it by using the Server Message Block (SMB) and NFS protocols on the file server.

  • You set permissions on the share for a user and for the user's primary group. For example, you set permissions for USER1 and for USERGROUP1.

  • You create a file or a folder in the share by using the account of USER1 from the file server or from a client computer that is running Windows Vista.

In this scenario, the file permissions in the share are incorrect. You can see that the user's primary group is not set on the file or on the folder.

Note The affected computers are as follows:

  • Non-domain-joined computers

  • Computers that use Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) for NFS identity mapping
