Warning Message After Typing DNS Name

SUMMARY

When you type a domain name system (DNS) name in the Network Identification Configuration box, you may receive the following message:
The computer name "computer name" contains one or more non-standard characters. Standard characters include letters (A-Z, a-z), digits (0-9), and hyphens. Using a non-standard name will prevent other users from finding your computer on the network, unless your network is using the Microsoft DNS Server. Do you wish to use this non-standard name?

Request for Comments (RFC) 1035 states that only letters, numbers, and hyphens are valid. However, because of the added functionality of dynamic updates, Microsoft DNS allows less stringent naming policies in order to comply with many client naming conventions. When you use an underscore or other special character, the name is updated with Microsoft DNS. You then receive the warning message stating that only Microsoft DNS is a supported method and other DNS servers may not support the registration.
