SYMPTOMS

During text-mode Setup, your keyboard may not work correctly, and you may be unable to use your keyboard to select the option to delete, create, or format a partition.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if your keyboard uses a layout other than the standard US-101 keyboard layout. For example, if you are using a Dvorak keyboard, the Dvorak.sys file is loaded during text-mode Setup, but it is ignored until GUI-mode Setup.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, press keys until you find the appropriate key that maps to the standard US-101 layout for that key.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

It can be very difficult navigating through Setup with a keyboard that has an alternate layout. In addition, since this affects the portion of Setup where you create or delete partitions, you could inadvertently delete a partition.

This does not apply to function keys.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
