Symptoms

You use the Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector to synchronize Microsoft Office Outlook to a Windows Live Hotmail account. After synchronization occurs, the Send/Receive Progress status bar in Outlook reports a Send/Receive error. When you click the status bar to view the result, you see the following error message:

“There is an error synchronizing your mail account. Please verify your account is configured correctly by first accessing your mail on the web.  Error: (Error Code).”

The error code that is referenced in the message will be one of the following four-digit numbers. The number represents a specific synchronization problem that is related to the junk e-mail settings:

4202

4203

4304

4350

4401

4403

Cause

This error is reported when the Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector account’s Junk/Blocked Senders list violates the server’s rules for appropriate addresses or domains. The Windows Live servers will reject changes and report an error if a client tries to sync a violation with the server. The error codes that are listed in "Symptoms" refer only to junk mail list errors that do not affect mail, calendar, or contacts sync.

Resolution

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft Outlook profile that contains the Outlook Hotmail Connector account.
  2. Click the Inbox folder for the Outlook Hotmail Connector account.
  3. In the Explorer ribbon Home tab, click the Junk menu, and then select Junk E-mail Options.
  4. Look at the address lists for both the Blocked Senders and Safe Senders tabs, and fix the violation based on the specific error code as follows:
    • Error 4202: Look for and remove addresses that have invalid characters, which include these:
       ! # $ % * / ? ^ ` { | } ~  _
    • Error 4203: Look for and remove any unblockable domains/addresses from the Block List or unallowable domains/addresses from the Safe Senders list (see "More Information"). The server also does not allow users to list their own email address in either list, so remove any instances of your own email address.
    • Error 4304: Hotmail only allows 500 addresses in each list, so remove some addresses from any list that totals more than 500 entries.
    • Error 4350: Look for addresses that exist in both Blocked Senders and Safe Senders, and remove one from either list. An address cannot be marked as both blocked and safe.
    • Error 4401: The client is trying to add an address that already exists on the server. Check to see whether an address is listed twice on either the Blocked Sender or Safe Sender list.
    • Error 4403: An address that you removed from your junk list does not exist on the server. This error should stop after five syncs.
  5. After you have fixed the violation, click Apply, and then click OK to save the changes to the Junk E-mail Options.
  6. In Outlook, click the Send/Receive All Folders button on the Send/Receive tab or press F9 on the keyboard to send these list changes to the server. The sync error should no longer be reported in Send/Receive progress.  If it is reported again, check your Blocked Senders and Safe Senders lists by logging on at http://live.com and accessing Hotmail Options. Remove additional violations that may cause the error to persist.
