Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:

    • Windows Vista

    • Windows Server 2008

    • Windows 7

    • Windows Server 2008 R2

  • You share some files on the computer.

  • The computer is under a heavy load situation.

  • You open a shared file, and you make some changes from a remote computer.

  • You close the shared file, and then you try to open it again.

  • The SMB server may not respond to client requests

In this scenario, you receive an "access denied" error.

Sporadically you may experience the following failure on a cluster.
Isalive Check of the Cluster File Server is failing with error in cluster log file:

Failed in NetShareGetInfo(ResourceName, ShareName), status 53. Tolerating...

Additionally, you may receive the following events logged in System Event log.

Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering
Event ID: 1587
Task Category: File Server Resource
Level: Error
User: SYSTEM
Description: Cluster file server resource 'ResourceName' failed a health check. This was because some of its shared folders were inaccessible. Verify that the folders are accessible from clients. Additionally, confirm the state of the Server service on this cluster node using Server Manager and look for other events related to the Server service on this cluster node.

Cause

This problem occurs because the server service leaks a handle to the shared file. The server service does not clean up resources correctly in some specific error conditions such as an out of memory error condition. Therefore, a file handle is leaked if the resource that is not cleaned owns the file handle.

Resolution

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes

Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
