Things to Try

Printer Unavailable

If the printer is attached directly to the computer, verify that the printer is on and properly connected. If the printer is on a network, verify that the printer is accessible from another computer on the network.

Capture a Port for the Network Printer

Before you begin this procedure, check with your network administrator to make sure that you have the correct path for the network printer.

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Right-click the icon for your printer, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  3. On the Details tab, click Capture Printer Port.
  4. In the Device list, click to select a port that is not used by another printer.
  5. In Path, type the network path to the printer, and then click OK.
  6. In the Print to the Following Port list, click to select the port that you chose in step 4, and then click OK.

Reinstall the Printer Driver or Check Network Print Services

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Right-click your default printer, and then click Delete on the shortcut menu. If you are asked if you want to remove extra files left on the system, click Yes.
  3. Double-click the Add Printer icon, and follow the instructions in the Add Printer Wizard to reinstall your printer driver. If you are asked if you want to replace existing files, click Yes.
  4. Additionally, the computer that is sharing the print may need attention with regard to print services. Contact the network administrator to ascertain if print services are functioning.
