HOW TO: Manually Delete Reports from the Backup Tool

When you backup or restore data using the Backup tool, a report is created that displays the results of operation. You can view these reports by clicking Reports on the Tools menu in the Backup tool.

The Backup tool keeps a copy of the last 10 reports and overwrites older reports as needed. The Backup tool does not provide a way to manually delete reports. There may be some circumstances where you need to manually delete one or more reports. WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

How to Manually Delete Backup Reports

To permanently delete a report so it no longer appears in the Backup tool, follow these steps:

1. Determine which report log number you want to delete. To do so, click Reports on the Tools menu, click the report you want to delete, and then click View. The report is opened in Notepad. Make a note of the Backupnn.log file name in the title bar, where nn is the report log number.
2. Using Registry Editor, delete the appropriate Log#nn value in the following registry key

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Ntbackup\Log Files
   						

   where nn is the same number as the Backupnn.log file you viewed in step 1.
3. Quit Registry Editor.
4. Delete the corresponding Backupnn.log file located in the "Documents and Settings\User_name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\WindowsNT\NTbackup\Data" folder.

NOTE: Under normal circumstances, you do not need to manually delete reports since the Backup tool keeps a copy of the last 10 reports and overwrites older reports as needed.
