This article describes how an administrator can assign Windows Installer (.msi) packages so that users have minimal interaction with the installation process.
To assign Windows Installer packages so that users have minimal interaction with the installation process:
- If you have an existing group policy, skip to step 3. If you need to create a group policy, right-click the organizational unit you want to apply the package to, and then click Properties.
- Click the Group Policy tab, click New, type a descriptive name for the group policy, and then press ENTER.
- Click the group policy, and then click Edit.
- If you want a user-based policy, double-click the Users branch to expand it, double-click Software Settings, right-click Software Installation, point to New, and then click Package. If you want a computer-based policy, double-click the Computer branch to expand it, double-click Software Settings, right-click Software Installation, point to New, and then click Package.
- Browse to the network share that contains the package (.msi file) you want to deploy, click the package, and then click Open.
- Click Configure Package Properties, and then click OK.
- Click the Deployment tab, click Assigned, click Basic, and then click OK.
NOTE: When you assign a package with these options, the administrator may need to apply a transform or edit the package (.msi file) to modify parts of the installation.
