FIX: Index Tuning Wizard Recommends That Indexes for System Tables Be Dropped

SYMPTOMS

While analyzing certain queries using the Index Tuning Wizard, it may recommend that indexes for system tables be dropped if the wizard is run with the following options set:
  • Perform Thorough Analysis is selected.
  • Keep All Existing Indexes is not selected.
NOTE: Do not drop any indexes on system tables regardless of the recommendations made by the Index Tuning Wizard.

WORKAROUND

Either of the following should prevent the problem from occurring:
  1. Make sure that the "Keep All existing indexes" is selected.
  2. Choose the "Save Script file" option in the Index Tuning Wizard, then edit it and remove the commands that drop the system table indexes before running the Index Tuning Wizard.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 7.0. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 1 for Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
