Office 365 Desktop Setup error message: "You do not have the Windows Update Agent installed on XP"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run Office 365 Desktop Setup on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), you receive the following error message:
You do not have the Windows Update Agent installed on XP.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when you use a Windows XP SP3-based computer that does not have the Windows Update Agent installed or if certain files were corrupted. In this scenario, some updates may not be installed by Office 365 Desktop Setup.

RESOLUTION
