Office 365 Desktop Setup error message: "Your computer requires an update to the Windows Installer Service"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run Office 365 Desktop Setup to install the latest software updates that are required for Microsoft Office 365 connectivity, you receive the following error message:
Your computer requires an update to the Windows Installer Service

CAUSE

This issue occurs when you do not have the latest version of the Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) service installed on your computer. The Windows Installer service is a required component for Office 365 Desktop Setup. The Windows Installer service helps install the required updates. You must be running the latest version of the service to complete these installations.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the latest version of the Windows Installer service. To install the latest version of the Windows Installer, connect to the Windows Update website (http://update.microsoft.com (http://update.microsoft.com) ). Or, use the following URL:
