You receive inconsistent results or an Event ID 22 when you run a query for the first time in SSAS 2008 or SSAS 2008 R2

SYMPTOMS

When you run a query for the first time in SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services (SSAS 2008) or in SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis Services (SSAS 2008 R2), you may experience one of the following issues.

Note These issues do not occur if you run the same query again after the data is cached.
  • The query returns incorrect results.
  • SSAS stops intermittently. Additionally, an event message that resembles the following is logged in the Application log:
    Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSSQLServerOLAPService
Event Category: (256)
Event ID: 22

Description:
The description for Event ID ( 22 ) in Source ( MSSQLServerOLAPService ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Internal error: An unexpected exception occurred.

    Also, when you check the SSAS log, an entry that resembles the following may be logged in the SSAS log:

    Message: (Source: \\?\<Drive:>\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS10.<SSAS Instance Name>\OLAP\Log\msmdsrv.log, Type:3, Category:256, Event ID: 0xC1000016)

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of an error in the FusionOfStorageEngineSubspaces feature in SSAS. By default, the feature is enabled, and the expected behavior is that the feature optimizes query performance in SSAS.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, disable the FusionOfStorageEngineSubspaces feature SSAS. To do this, set the value to 0x1 for the DisableFusionOfStorageEngineSubspaces property in the Analysis Services configuration file (Msmdsrv.ini). Use this workaround with discretion because the query performance may be affected.

Note The Msmdsrv.ini file is usually located under the following directory:
%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS10.<AS Instance Name>\OLAP\Config
