You cannot view a list in Datasheet view after you install the 64-bit version of Office 2010

Symptoms

You cannot view a list in Datasheet view on a SharePoint website after you install the 64-bit version of Microsoft Office 2010.

When you click Actions and then click Edit in Datasheet on a SharePoint 2003 or 2007 site, or you click the List tab and then click Datasheet view on a SharePoint 2010 site, you receive the following error message:

The list cannot be displayed in Datasheet view for one or more of the following reasons:

A datasheet component compatible with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation is not installed.
Your Web browser does not support ActiveX controls.
A component is not properly configured for 32-bit or 64-bit support.

A 64-bit version of the Datasheet component is not available for Office 2010.

Resolution

You can install the 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components to enable the Datasheet component. These components are available from the Microsoft download center:

2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components

The 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components installs a 32-bit version of the Datasheet component that will work with the 64-bit version of Office 2010 as long as you are using a 32-bit version of an Internet browser.

If you are using a 64-bit version of an Internet browser, for example the 64-bit version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0, there is no support for the Edit in Datasheet component.

Also, you must install all 64-bit versions of Office products before you install the 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components. Therefore, if you have to have Microsoft Project 2010, Microsoft Visio 2010, or Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010 (These components are not installed as part of an Office 2010 suite), please install the 64-bit versions of these products before you install the Data Connectivity Components.

If you try to install the 64-bit versions of Project, Visio, or SharePoint Designer after you installed the 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components, you receive the following error message:

You cannot install the 64-bit version of Office 2010 because you have 32-bit Office products installed. These 32-bit products are not supported with 64-bit installations:

Microsoft Office Access database engine 2007 (English)

If you want to install 64-bit Office 2010, you must install all 32-bit Office products first, and then run setup.exe in the x64 folder. If you want to install 32-bit Office 2010, close the Setup program and then either go to the x86 folder at the root of your CD or DVD and run setup.exe, or get the 32-bit Office 2010 from the same place you purchased 64-bit Office 2010.

If you receive this error message, you must remove the 32-bit products that are listed in the error message from your computer. Also, to regain the Datasheet capability, you must follow these steps:

Remove the 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components.
Install the 64-bit versions of the Office products that you want to have installed.
Reinstall the 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components.

Also, you may receive requests to install updates or service packs for the 2007 Microsoft Office system, for Microsoft Office Access 2007, or for Microsoft Office Access Runtime and Data Connectivity 2007 because you have the Data Connectivity Components installed on the computer. These updates do not affect the 64-bit version of Office 2010, and these updates should be installed on your computer.

Workaround

If your business needs do not require you to use the 64-bit version of Office 2010, we recommend that you uninstall the 64-bit version of Office 2010 and install the 32-bit version of Office 2010. A 32-bit version of the Datasheet component is installed with the 32-bit version of Office 2010.
