PPT2000: Error Message: "PowerPoint Viewer Cannot Read <presentation>"

SYMPTOMS

When you view an unpacked PowerPoint 2000 presentation using the Microsoft PowerPoint viewer 97, you may receive the following error message:
PowerPoint Viewer can't read C:\path\filename.ppt

CAUSE

This behavior can be caused when you change the PowerPoint 2000 default file save format to the PowerPoint 95 file format. This behavior can also occur for other reasons, including corruption.

RESOLUTION

Change the default file save format in PowerPoint 2000, and repack your presentation.
  1. Open your presentation in PowerPoint 2000.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Save tab, click to select PowerPoint Presentation from the Save PowerPoint files as:list.
  4. Use Pack and Go again, and repack the presentation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000.
