Pressing SHIFT+ENTER Does Not Restart Windows 2000

SYMPTOMS

If you click Start, click Shut Down, and then press SHIFT+ENTER or press SHIFT and click OK, the Shut Down Windows dialog box disappears, but Windows 2000 does not restart.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98, if you click Start, click Shut Down, and then press SHIFT+ENTER or press SHIFT and click OK, Windows may restart without rebooting the computer. (Note that although this may work, this is not supported functionality in Windows 95/98).

In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, the computer restarts whether or not you press SHIFT.
