Symptoms

You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. After you create a DVD disc by using Windows DVD Maker, Windows Explorer does not correctly recognize the DVD drive and the DVD disc. Additionally, Windows Explorer displays the DVD drive as a CD drive.

When this issue occurs, the DVD media cannot be played correctly. For example, the DVD disc cannot be played automatically. Additionally, Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD disc.

Cause

The Windows Shell tracks the state of DVD drives. This issue occurs because there is an error in the state tracking logic. This error causes the Windows Shell to behave as if the drive is inaccessible. Therefore, the drive state is not displayed correctly in Windows Explorer.

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Put a blank DVD-R or DVD-RW disc into the DVD drive.

  2. Start Windows DVD Maker.

  3. Click Add items to add the sample video Wildlife.

  4. Click Next, and then click Burn to create the DVD.

Note After the DVD is created successfully, the DVD disc is ejected by Windows DVD Maker, and the DVD drive name is changed to CD Drive.

  5. Exit Windows DVD Maker.

In this scenario, you notice that the AutoPlay function does not work. For example, the DVD disc is not played automatically. Additionally, when you start Windows Media Player, the DVD disc is not recognized correctly.
