Issue that this hotfix package fixes

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 now can prevent a tenant from creating a large broadcast to the SharePoint site that is running PowerPoint Broadcast Service. A large broadcast can disrupt the resources on the server for other tenants.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Installation notes

Before you install the hotfix, you must stop the PowerPoint service on all the servers that are running this service. You have to install this hotfix on each server that is part of the SharePoint Server farm. After you install the hotfix, you must rerun the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard (Psconfig.exe). To do this, you can use SharePoint SharePoint 2010 Central Administration, or you can use the PowerShell command.

Use SharePoint SharePoint 2010 Central Administration
  1. On any server that is part of the SharePoint Server farm, click Start, point to All Programs, select Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products, and then select SharePoint 2010 Central Administration.
  2. On the SharePoint Central Administration home page, in System Settings section, click Manage services on server.
  3. On the Services on Server: servername page, select a server in Server: box, and then click the Stop link that is after PowerPoint Service. Wait until the status of the service shows Stopped.
  4. Repeat step 3 to stop the PowerPoint service on all the servers that are running the PowerPoint service.
  5. Install the hotfix on each server that is part of the SharePoint Server farm.
  6. In the same location that is mentioned in step 3, select a server, select PowerPoint Service, and then click the Start link that is after PowerPoint Service. Wait until the status of the service shows started.
  7. Repeat step 7 to start the PowerPoint service on all the servers that are running the PowerPoint service.
  8. Run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard (Psconfig.exe).

Use PowerShell command
  1. Start the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell from any server that part of the SharePoint Server farm.
    Note To run the following commands successfully, you may have to provide an elevated permission.
  2. Run the following command in PowerShell:
    Get-SPServiceInstance | ?{ $_.TypeName –eq “PowerPoint Service” } | Stop-SPServiceInstance
  3. Wait until the services are stopped. To check whether the services are stopped, run the following command in PowerShell:
    Get-SPServiceInstance | ?{ $_.TypeName –eq “PowerPoint Service” } | select Status
    Wait until the status shows Disabled.
  4. Install the hotfix on each server that is part of the SharePoint Server farm.
  5. Start the PowerPoint service by running the following command in PowerShell:
    Get-SPServiceInstance | ?{ $_.TypeName –eq “PowerPoint Service” } | Start-SPServiceInstance
    
  6. Wait until the services are started. To check whether the services are started, run the following command in PowerShell:
    Get-SPServiceInstance | ?{ $_.TypeName –eq “PowerPoint Service” } | select Status
    Wait until the status shows Online.
  7. Run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard (Psconfig.exe).

There are no prerequisites for installing this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.

To use the hotfix in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.
