How to determine whether the update is installed

To determine the version of the files that are installed on the computer, follow these steps, as appropriate for the operating system that you are running.

Windows 7

1. Click Start, and then click Computer.
2. In the Search Computer box, type Msxml5.dll, and then press ENTER.
3. Right-click Msxml5.dll, and then click Properties.
4. On the General tab, note the properties of the Msxml5.dll file that is installed on the computer.

Windows Vista

1. Click Start

2. Click Advanced Search.
3. In the Location box, click Local Hard Drives.
4. In the Name box, type Msxml5.dll, and then click Search.
5. In the list of files, right-click Msxml5.dll, and then click Properties.
6. On the General tab, note the properties of the Msxml5.dll file that is installed on the computer.

Windows XP

1. Start Search Companion. To do this, click Start, and then click Search.
   
   Note If Windows Desktop Search starts, click Click here to use Search Companion.
2. In the Search Results window, click All files and folders in the Search Companion pane.
3. In the All or part of the file name box, type Msxml5.dll, and then click Search.
4. In the list of files, right-click Msxml5.dll, and then click Properties.
5. On the General tab and on the Version tab, note the properties of the Msxml5.dll file that is installed on the computer.

How to uninstall this update

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
   
3. Use one of the following procedures, depending on the operating system that you are running:
   • Windows 7 and Windows Vista
     1. Click View installed updates.
     2. In the list of updates, locate and then click update 2284654, and then click Uninstall.
   • Windows XP
     1. Click to select the Show updates check box.
     2. In the list of updates, locate and then click update 2284654, and then click Remove.

Known issue

Windows Update returns error code 646 or error code 0x80070646.

Office updates may not install from Microsoft Update or by manually installing updates with the /quiet and /passive flags because of a corrupted system environment variable or failed permission escalation.
