Symptoms

You apply or update some Group Policy preference settings on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008. However, you find that the memory usage of an instance of the Svchost.exe process keeps increasing. After a while, some applications or services that are running on the computer stop working.

Notes

  • The Group Policy client service runs in an instance of the Svchost.exe process.

  • If you use Performance Monitor to monitor the memory usage of the Svchost.exe process when this issue occurs, you find that the value of the Private Bytes counter keeps increasing.

Cause

This issue occurs because the allocated memory for the Svchost.exe process is not released when Group Policy preference settings are applied or updated.
