Some Office 2000 graphics filters are not available in Paint

SYMPTOMS

Although you installed all of the graphics filters with Office 2000, when you click the Save as type list in Microsoft Paint, you may not see the following filters listed:
  • JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg,*.jpeg)
  • Graphics Interchange Format (*.gif)

RESOLUTION

Install the graphics filters

To install all of the graphics filters, follow these steps:
  1. Start Office Setup.
  2. Click Add or Remove Features.
  3. In the Microsoft Office 2000: Update Features dialog box, click the plus sign (+) next to Converters and Filters.
  4. Click the list next to Graphics Filters, and then click to select Run all from My Computer.
  5. Click Update Now.

WORKAROUND

Method 1: Steps to workaround the problem for Windows 2000-based computer

If the method in the "Resolution" section of this article did not work, change the registry value of JPEG Graphics Filters. To do so, follow these steps.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Quit all programs.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. Type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. Locate and expand the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Graphics Filters\Export\JPEG
  5. Click the Extensions key.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type jpg, and then click OK.
  8. Quit Registry Editor.

Note: When Office repair installation or restoration programs are applied, registory values are set back to the default values. For this reason this issue may be ocurred repeatedly. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Method 2: Steps to reproduce and workaround the problem for Windows 98-based computer

  1. On a clean installation of Windows 98, start Microsoft Paint.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. Click the Save as type list. You do not see an option for either .jpg or .gif.

  4. Quit Paint.
  5. Perform a Custom installation of Office 2000.
  6. Expand the Office Tools feature in the Microsoft Office 2000: Selecting Features dialog box, and make sure Microsoft Photo Editor is set to Run from My Computer.
  7. After Office Setup is finished, start Microsoft Paint and repeat steps 2-3.
  8. Quit Paint and start Photo Editor.
  9. Quit Photo Editor and start Paint.
  10. Repeat steps 2-3. You now see entries for the .jpeg and .gif graphics filters.
