This article was previously published under Q233525

SYMPTOMS

If you have configured SQL Server as a replication distributor and the Automatically Refresh Items Displayed Under Replication Monitor In The Server Tree option is enabled (which it is by default), it is possible to have the SQL Server Enterprise Manager window closed but the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) executable Mmc.exe remain as a process in the Windows NT Task Manager. The following sequence of events must have occurred for this to happen:
  1. Replication was installed and the Automatically Refresh Items Displayed Under Replication Monitor In The Server Tree option was enabled.
  2. The MSSQLServer service was then stopped.
  3. The SQL Server Enterprise Manager console was closed.

CAUSE

Because the Automatically Refresh Items Displayed Under Replication Monitor In The Server Tree option is set, the Mmc.exe process remains running in the background after the window is closed, continuing to try to perform its refreshes.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem do not set the Automatically Refresh Items Displayed Under Replication Monitor In The Server Tree option.
