No UPS Tool in Control Panel in Windows 2000

There is no Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) tool in Control Panel in Windows 2000.

UPS functionality has been integrated into the Power Options tool in Control Panel. Most UPS devices have a either a serial or Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection to a computer.

USB

A UPS that is connected using a USB cable is represented as a battery in Windows 2000 and is configured using the Alarms and Power Meter tabs in the Power Options tool. In this case the UPS presents itself as a Human Input Device (HID) compliant device and Windows 2000 automatically installs the necessary drivers.

Serial/PnP

A UPS that is connected using a serial cable is configured using the UPS tab in the Power Options tool. Windows 2000 may or may not recognize a serial PnP UPS.

Windows 2000 contains serial support for the following American Power Conversion UPS devices:

• Back-UPS
• Back-UPS Pro
• Basic Port on Communications Accessory
• Basic signaling to any APC UPS
• Matrix-UPS
• PowerStack
• Smart Signaling to any APC UPS
• Smart-UPS
• Symmetra Power Array

You can also click Generic in the Manufacturer box, and then click Custom in the Model box to manually configure the UPS signal polarity. Check your UPS documentation for information about how to configure the UPS service for your UPS.

NOTE: On laptops and desktops with a USB-connected UPS, there is no UPS tab in Power Options.
UPS devices that use a serial connection may use a variety of proprietary cables with different cables providing different levels of functionality. If you have problems configuring your UPS it may help to contact the UPS manufacturer for information about your specific UPS cable requirements.
Because docking stations vary in their implementation of power management, Microsoft suggests you use the UPS for power backup only. Connecting either a USB or serial cable may result in unexpected behavior.
