Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You create a folder on an NTFS file system volume on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7.

  • You configure this folder as a reparse point or as a mount point for volumes that will be added.

  • A raw volume is mounted on the folder.

In this scenario, you are prompted with the following message when the volume is mounted to the reparse point or to the mount point:

You need to format the disk in drive <drive letter> before you can use it.
Do you want to format it?

If you click the Format disk button in the message dialog box, the wrong volume is formatted. For example, when you mount a volume on the E:\mount folder, you receive the message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. If you click the Format disk button, volume E is formatted instead of the mounted volume.

Cause

The issue occurs because the shell disk-formatting function of the Shell32.dll module is not mount-point aware. Therefore, a wrong volume is formatted.

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
