XCON: Mail Flow Stops with MTA Event ID 4287, Error Code 8640

SYMPTOMS

Over particularly loaded slow links and very slow response times, mail flow over an X.400 Connector may appear to be stopped.

The MTA logs the following event in the application log:
Event ID: 4287
Description: Internal error in POP4 with error code 8640.
In Calls.out you can read:
Call-stack for TID 006 (NT:0316) : POP4 DOWN      Busy 0%, stalled on send 
to q/loc 004, normally services q 016
				

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Exchange Server version 5.5. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5. This problem was first corrected in Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 3.
