Unable to Hear CD Audio in Windows 2000

When you use Windows 2000, you may not hear CD audio through your digital speakers.

This issue can occur if you do not enable digital CD audio playback on your CD-ROM drive.

To enable digital CD playback, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click System.
3. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
4. In Device Manager, click the + (plus symbol) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives, and then click your CD-ROM drive.
5. On the Action menu, click Properties.
6. On the Properties tab, click to select the Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device.
7. Click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted.

When you use USB speakers without a sound card, CD audio can only be heard if you enable digital CD audio. If the CD-ROM drive you are using does not support digital CD audio, then you need a sound card with a CD audio cable to hear CD audio.
