Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You create a table that contains a nondeterministic computed column in a SQL Server 2008 or a SQL Server 2008 R2 database. For example, you run the following statement to create a table that contains a nondeterministic computed column: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[t1](
    [DateOfBirth] DATE,
[Age] AS (FLOOR(DATEDIFF(DAY,[DateOfBirth],GETDATE())/(365.0))))GO Note In this statement, the GETDATE function is nondeterministic.

  • You run the sp_createstats stored procedure to improve performance.

Note The sp_createstats stored procedure creates single-column statistics for any eligible columns in the database

In this scenario, the sp_createstats stored procedure fails. Therefore, the statistics for some eligible columns might not have been created. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

Msg 2729, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Column 'Age' in table 'dbo.t1' cannot be used in an index or statistics or as a partition key because it is non-deterministic.

Cause

This issue occurs because the sp_createstats stored procedure does not skip the nondeterministic computed columns.
