WD2000: Custom Toolbar Disappears After Mail Merge

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 2000, when you open a document based on a template that contains a custom toolbar and then start a mail merge, the custom toolbar is no longer available in the original document.

CAUSE

After Word swaps Single Document Interface (SDI) frames, Word does not ensure that each frame's toolbar set has the correct custom toolbars.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

Start Word 2000 and open a new blank document.
On the File menu, click Save As.
In the File name box in the Save As dialog box, type Test.
In the Save as type list, click Document Template (*.dot).
Click Save to close the Save As dialog box.
On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Customize.
On the Toolbars tab of the Customize dialog box, click New.
In the Toolbar name box, type TestTB.
In the Make toolbar available to list, click Test.dot.
Click OK to close the New Toolbar dialog box.
Click Close to close the Customize dialog box. The new toolbar is now visible.
On the File menu, click Save.
On the File menu, click Close.
On the File menu, click New.
On the General tab of the New dialog box, double-click Test.dot to open a new document based on the template.
On the Tools menu, click Mail Merge.
In the Mail Merge Helper dialog box, click Create, and then click Form Letters.
In the Microsoft Word dialog box, click New Main Document.
In the Mail Merge Helper dialog box, click Close.

Result: The custom toolbar is missing from the original document window and from the Toolbars list on the View menu.

Expect: The custom toolbar is still visible.
