Symptoms

On a client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you have a folder that is encrypted by using Encrypting File System (EFS). You upload the files in the encrypted folder to a Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) share folder. The files that are uploaded to the WebDAV share folder remain encrypted.

In this situation, you may want the encrypted files to be decrypted during the file copy operation so that other users have access to the files. However, you cannot find a method to disable EFS encryption during the WebDAV file copy operation.  For example, you cannot view the EFS encrypted files from the Explorer view in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS). Therefore, you want the files to be decrypted.

This article helps you fix this problem.

Cause

This issue occurs because encryption information is maintained for secure file copy and storage operations.

Resolution

A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. To apply this hotfix, you have to change the registry. For more information, see the "Registry Information" section.

After you apply this hotfix, the following changes are made:

  • When you copy an encrypted file to a WebDAV share folder that is not encrypted, the encryption on the file is removed. Additionally, you receive a warning message and an option to cancel the file copy operation.

  • The Advanced tab on the Properties page of a file or folder in a WebDAV share folder is hidden. Therefore, you cannot encrypt the file or folder.

Note This change only applies to WebDAV share locations

  • When you copy an encrypted file to an encrypted folder that is located on the WebDAV share folder, the file remains encrypted. Additionally, the encryption remains when you overwrite an existing encrypted file on the WebDAV share folder.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2 and for Windows 7" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
