FIX: "Infinite recursion detected" error message when a drillthrough action is used in SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services SP3 CU7

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a cube in a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services (SSAS) database.
  • You apply SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (SP3) Cumulative Update 7 (CU7) or a later version of SQL Server 2005.
  • You define a drillthrough action in the cube.
  • You use SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to browse the data of the cube, and then you try to drill through a cell that is defined by using the drillthrough action.

In this scenario, the drillthrough action fails, and the following error message is received:
The selected action cannot be completed because of the following error.
Infinite recursion detected. The loop of dependencies is: .
This error may have occurred because the definition for the action is not valid. Verify the definition using the Actions view.

Note This issue occurs more frequently on an x64-based computer than on an x86-based computer.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because a code change in SQL Server 2005 SP3 CU7 increases the minimal available stack size in SSAS. Additionally, SQL Server 2005 SP3 CU7 reduces the actual available stack that can be used by a thread. Therefore, a complex query that has a large call stack size may encounter an infinite recursion error more frequently.

Note An infinite recursion error occurs when the available call stack size is larger than the minimal available stack size that is internally set by SSAS.
